My University Experience

I have been a student at the University of Kent since 2022, studying Computer Science with a year in industry, and I will graduate this July. My academic journey has been shaped by the theoretical and practical foundations of computing and by a curiosity about how technology interacts with people and society, as shown in my favourite modules, which range from Human-Computer Interaction and Cognitive Robotics to Theory of Computing, Internet of Things, and Computing Law and Professional Responsibility.

I also completed a Year in Industry at the Walt Disney Company as a Solutions Engineer Intern, as discussed here.

Outside of my studies, I’ve never been drawn to the typical clubbing scene, but  I’ve found real value in building close friendships, socialising in more relaxed settings, and gaining independence. I have also explored a range of societies, from BSL and Dance to TinkerSoc and the Kent Students Scout and Guide Organisation, and served as the Sponsorship Officer for KentHackIt, a student-led hackathon organised by the Computer Science Society. As well as continuing to be involved in guiding outside of university, and attending regular pub quizzes with friends.

University hasn’t always been straightforward. In my first year, I struggled with the lack of structure, but I developed systems that worked for me, which built my confidence and independence. Navigating personal loss and burnout in my final year tested my resilience, but these experiences strengthened my perspective and prepared me to face future challenges with perseverance.

My time at university has not only shaped my academics but also the people I have met and the things I have done. It has been a time for growth, self-discover and learning how to balance challenges with opportunities, to do everything I want to while being able to take care of myself when I need to. It has shaped not only what I want to do but also who I want to be.
